- As highlighted by the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Richard Smalley, global access to energy is key to tackling every single major issue confronting the planet today. Moreover, if the critical challenge of climate change is to be addressed then this energy must be low cost and sustainable. It has been widely recognized for some time that organic photovoltaics (OPV) will play a major role in the portfolio of renewable energy sources since they offer enormous potential as inexpensive coatings capable of generating electricity directly from sunlight. The key advantage of OPVs is that the polymer blend materials can be printed at high speeds across large areas using roll-to-roll (R2R) processing techniques thus creating the tantalizing vision of coating every roof and other suitable building surface with photovoltaic materials at extremely low cost. Recent full economic modeling of the balance of materials (BOM) and balance of system (BOS) costs, have highlighted the long-term commercial. viability of OPV-based technology in today's energy marketplace. In this chapter, the study of the active layer morphology of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) and nanoparticulate (NP) OPV films is described, with examples taken from our work at Newcastle over the past two decades.
